After electric vehicles and cranes, the U.S. Congressmen are targeting Chinese drones.
According to Reuters, a bipartisan group of lawmakers called on the Biden administration on the 20th local time to impose higher tariffs on Chinese drones, including those transferred from other countries into the United States, and provide new incentives to promote the development of U.S. drone manufacturers.
The report said that the group included Republican Mike Gallagher, chairman of the House of Representatives' "Special Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and China", senior Democrat Rajakumar Krishnamurthy of the committee, and 11 other members. In a letter to the U.S. Trade Representative, the Department of Commerce and the Department of Homeland Security, they called on the Biden administration to take actions such as raising tariffs on products of Chinese drone manufacturers including DJI, and reiterated that the purpose was to "prevent the large-scale proliferation of a technology that poses a clear threat to national and economic security in the U.S. market".
According to Reuters, these congressmen hyped up the issue by claiming that Chinese drone manufacturers account for over 77% of the U.S. consumer drone market and over 90% of the commercial drone market. The letter alleged that the current 25% tariff on Chinese drones is "insufficient to address" the surge in imports. As a result, they urged the Biden administration to raise tariffs on Chinese drones and promote the development of domestic drones in the United States.
Reuters reported that the aforementioned U.S. agencies did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and neither did DJI or other companies. For some time, some politicians and media in the United States have repeatedly accused China of "Made in China" issues, targeting various industries including but not limited to Chinese-made electric vehicles and cranes.
